Weighing 3 600 tonnes, the facade is an immense and unparalleled openwork structure made of intertwined beams and rods of varying thickness placed around the perimeter of the stadium.
Its rests on 44 pyramidal reinforced concrete columns with hinged supports ensuring mobility and allowing the structure to withstand temperature, wind or seismic pressure.
The Kolchuga (chain mail) windproof facade mesh is made of stainless steel coil. 19 000 steel rings affix it to the frame of intertwined steel cables that are attached to the facade.
The cable-stayed structure is Russia's largest and uses highly durable steel wire ropes and metallic elements. The particular design was chosen as the most efficient in terms of use of space and metal consumption.
Unlike at most stadiums in the world, the load-bearing elements are not massive metal structures. Instead, high-strength steel ropes with a strength limit of 1 570 MPa are used.
Installation took several months and was carried out in two large stages: Assembly and lifting. A number of parts could not be installed by cranes and were precisely lifted by Ka-32 helicopters to the altitude of 49,5 metres and installed by high-altitude workers.
The weight of the cable-stayed roofing above the stands is 2 500 tonnes, the weight of the compression ring — 1 300 tonnes. And the total area of the roof-covering membrane is 77 000 m².
Pedestrian passages and interchanges around the stadium form a five-pointed star, which in combination with other facilities follows the shape of Russia's Order of Victory. The stained glass of the stadium and entrances is the tempered semi-illuminated ExtraClear glass. In summer it reflects sunlight, while preserving heat in the winter.
The pitch is like a layered cake in that is comprised of various materials. Inside this cake is a set of untility lines and specialised equipment that ensure the best quality of the pitch in all weather. Once the grass roots had grown, they were stiched with polymer threats to increase surface stability. Over 750 kg of a mixture of several varieties of ryegrass was used.
The stadium has highly stable multimedia systems. The stands feature two large screens. In an emergency the screens will display urgent information, while uninterruptible power supply systems will ensure they remain operational for three hours even if all power is cut off at the stadium. Utility lines in and around the stadium include: water supply and sewerage, electricity, lighting, lightning protection and grounding, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, security, low-voltage communication and information transfer networks, among many others. The command and control center provides for the management of events and effective cooperation of all services and teams.
